GEoREST aims at developing a novel methodology to predict and mitigate induced seismicity. Fluid injection related to underground resources has become widespread, causing numerous cases of induced seismicity. If felt, induced seismicity has a negative effect on public perception and may jeopardise wellbore stability and infrastructure, which has led to the cancellation of several projects.
El Premio Nacional de Investigación para Jóvenes concedido por el Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades en la modalidad Matilde Ucelay, en Ingenierías y arquitectura otorgado a Víctor Vilarrasa es profesor de Investigación del CSIC, en el Instituto Mediterráneo de Estudios Avanzados (IMEDEA). A recently published study presents a model that simulates the mechanisms that may have caused induced seismicity at the EGS project in Basel, Switzerland.
Researchers from the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA CSIC-UIB), and the Institute for Environmental Diagnosis and Water Studies (IDAEA-CSIC), and the University of Colorado (USA) have published a study on a proposed model that aims to explain the mechanism that resulted in induced seismicity at Basel, Switzerland during and after the stimulation phase of the EGS project from back in 2006.
