Dr. Víctor Vilarrasa will talk about a recent interdisciplinary study (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S030626192100814X) on the potential of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) to accelerate CO₂ emissions reduction to meet the reduction targets of 2030 and reach zero emissions by 2050. At the Spanish level, CCS has the potential to reduce 21% of the current CO₂ emissions. Of this 21%, 16% correspond to the energy sector and 5% to the hard-t-abate industrial sector. While CO₂ emissions of the energy sector can eventually be eliminated by shifting the energy sources to renewables, the industrial sector cannot get rid of the emissions related to certain industrial processes, such as cement, steel and chemicals production, because the reactions that take place to manufacture these goods generate CO₂. The study has focused on the major emitters, but once the infrastructure of transport and storage of CO₂ is built, smaller emitters could join with minimum cost, enhancing the amount of CO₂ emissions reduction.
